Cockatiels are probably the most commonly kept pet parrot in to- days households. They are beauti- ful birds, small and easy to care for and come in a wide variety of visual colors along with many different genetic "splits" which are invisible color traits in their DNA. Unknown to most people, cockatiels are true "cockatoos", they are just the smallest spec- ies according to DNA tests and studies. Contrary to popular belief, you CANNOT tell the sex by the orange cheek patches!!!! Sorry for the poor quality of the pic! It was taken with my camera phone. Here are some more pics of cockatiels:
This is Chardenay, a WF Cinnamon/S/Pied female.
This is Smokey, a WF Gray as a baby.
This is Smokey, a WF Gray in adult plumage.
These are babies that were still in the nest box!
This is the Cinnamon Pearl/S/Pied/S/WF pictured above in adult plumage. Females retain the "speckling" but if this had turned out to be a male, the male Pearls in any color loose their spots and will look like a regular colored bird, in this case it would have just looked like a Cinnamon/S/Pied. Remember that if you want a Pearl of any color and want to keep the spots you need to ensure it is a female or the spots will disap- pear at 1 year of age.
This is a WF Lutino, commonly called "albino".
