Welcome to the picture page for Miracle, my new baby Umbrella Cockatoo. I'll try to keep it as updated as possible but please keep in mind that after I take pictures which can take a week or two, I have to get the film developed and then scan and edit the pictures. Click on this link to see the daily record for Miracle including his weight, amount of formula given at each feeding and my comments on his growth and myself. Updated August 1, 2002
This is Miracle at Day 1. I'm pretty sure it is a male but DNA testing when the chick is a bit older will confirm the sex. Either way I have named this chick Miracle.
This is Miracle at 3 Days Old being fed. Hand feeding a baby parrot is very dif- ficult, time consuming and can be deadly if you do not know what you are doing. In this pic I'm using 1cc syringes to feed with.
This is Miracle at 3 Days Old. This pic is showing the size comparison to my hand. You must also weigh the chick constantly to make sure it is gaining the proper weight. You can also see a mug with a red thermometer in it. The feeding formula must be at a proper temperature. If it is too cold the chick will not eat, but if it is too hot it can scorch or kill the chick.
This is Miracle at 7 Days Old. The white ball is a Ping-Pong ball to show the size comparison. The plastic bowl in the back ground is what the chick is placed in with padding and tissue so it doesn't roll all over the brooder. The pink towel that is in all the pics is also warmed up to the proper temperat- ure during feeding so the chick doesn't get chilled. This picture also shows a great shot of the crop right after I got done feeding. The crop is the big sac under the lower beak which stores the food before it is pushed into the stomach for digestion.
Here is Miracle at 10 days old with a full crop of food. As you can see the ear canals are now open and you can barely see the beginning of the seperation of the eyelids. The yellow down you can see is all that Miracle developed.
Here is Miracle at 16 days old. As you can see he has developed very quickly compared to the previous pictures. Now he has his pin feathers and his eyes are completely open but he has them closed in this pic from the flash of the camera. You can also see the band on his [right] leg. The band ensures to the public, pet owners and breeders that he was born in captivity and not illegally taken from the wild!
Here is Miracle at 21 days old. As you can see the feathers are developing at a very fast rate. I keep trying to get a picture of him with his eyes open but every time I feed him he would rather go to sleep.
In just a few days it is amazing how much the feathers have developed. Some person said he looked like a bird with Q-tips coming out of it. Strangely enough that is a good description of him!
