Here are a few pics of self-contained Avian Pox in the feet of Alpha, a newly trapped passage tiercel Red-Tail hawk belonging to my friend, Greg Wojtera. The lessions on his feet and toes were present upon capture but nothing was thought of them until they opened up. At first we believed they were most likely small wounds from hunting. Once the lessions opened up and presented moist, red tissue I told Greg to take the bird into an Avian Vet as I suspected Septicemia. Greg had originally taken Alpha to a vet and I disagreed with his treatment regimn so I advised Greg to get a second opinion. This time he took Alpha to the Louisiana State University School of Veterinary Medicine. The previous medical regimn was to give Alpha a weeks worth of oral Baytril (25mg pills) and to apply Silver Sulfadiazine twice daily. The previous vet did not culture, asperate or biopsy the lessions. Instead he took a few pics and emailed them to Dr. Pat Redig's office in Minnessota. The new vet where Greg got the second opinion washed the lessions with dil- uted Chlorohexidine solution and then a fine needle aspirate was taken of all of the lessions for cytological evaluation. Greg was advised to apply Povidone Iodine to Alpha's feet twice daily for 2 weeks or until the cytology results come in.![]()
